Cherie Hacker
Born in Chicago, Cherie Hacker’s career spans over 40 years. She earned an MFA from the
Maryland Institute College of Art, served a Graduate Internship at the Smithsonian American Art
Museum, and holds a Bachelor’s in Studio Art from UC Davis. With an extensive list of solo and
group exhibitions, highlights include Ardgillan Castle, Ireland; Gallery Gora, Montreal, Canada;
Kenneth B. Gallery, Florence, Oregon; Reno City Hall, Nevada; Salmagundi Art Center,
Greenwich Village, New York; and in traveling portrait painting exhibits at museums and world
trade centers throughout the East Coast of Firefighters who lost their lives in 911.
Hacker calls herself an “Abstract Modernist.” Cubism and Surrealism influenced her artistic
development with visits to the Art Institute of Chicago. In graduate school on the East Coast,
exposure to Abstract Expressionism with its lively brush strokes and added ephemera
emphasized and validated her use of a wide range of media. The work brings focus to the
importance of the picture plane. It’s about being a painting, as well as the viewers response.
Cherie’s life and art are strongly influenced by her experiences in nature. In addition to painting,
Hacker is dedicated to her Lamp & Endtable Environmental Art Project, now in its twenty-
second year.
